Treatment of stomach diseases

The treatment method depends on the type of stomach disease. Mucositis and gastropathies, such as caused by alcohol abuse or analgesics, usually resolve spontaneously after the damaging factor has ceased to function. In the past, surgery was the mainstay of treatment of peptic ulcer disease. Currently, most cases can be successfully treated conservatively. In this case, the eradication of H. pylori bacteria, the use of drugs that reduce the secretion of hydrochloric acid and an appropriate diet are of key importance.

Treatment of stomach cancer depends mainly on the stage of the disease. In the case of cancer detected at an early stage, endoscopic excision of the affected mucosa is possible. However, in Poland, the vast majority of gastric cancers are diagnosed to a high degree of advancement. The basic method of treatment is then surgical removal of the stomach and surrounding lymph nodes, as well as radio- and chemotherapy. If the tumor is unresectable, palliative radiotherapy or chemotherapy is used. It is also possible to make special connections bypassing the tumor or nutritional fistulas.

Treatment of functional dysphagia can be difficult due to the complexity of its causes. It is often necessary to seek the help of various specialists. They are applicable, inter alia, drugs that reduce the secretion of hydrochloric acid and drugs that improve the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract. In functional diseases of the digestive tract, the help of a psychotherapist and the use of antidepressants may also be necessary. Modification of the diet can also help to reduce symptoms.
